Soirée Conférence
The Jews In France: From Exile to Emancipation
An Illustrated presentation by Renée Morel
Thursday May 29th @ 7pm
Continuing from her previous lecture at the Jewish Community Library on Jews in the Kingdom of France, Renée Morel will give a richly illustrated presentation on the complex history of the Jews in France as the country slowly evolved into a modern state. Morel will trace the precarious position of Jews from their expulsion from French soil in the 14th century through their gradual reabsorption, generally for economic reasons. She will discuss the debate over Jewish emancipation at the
time of the French Revolution, leading to the granting of civil rights and, for the first time, full citizenship for French Jews.
Renée Morel, born in French Indochina, grew up in Paris near the historical Jewish Marais district. She currently teaches French and linguistics at City College of San Francisco, and regularly lectures on art, aesthetics, history, literature, and semiotics. wwww.jewishcommunitylibrary.org
Program made possible, in part, by Larry and Hélène Edelman Co-presented by Lehrhaus Judaica and Alliance Française de San Francisco Please note that this presentation will not be held at the AFSF.
If interested in attending please join us at 1835 Ellis St. San Francisco, Ca

Wandering In Paris:
Luminaries and Love in the City of Light
The Paris Wanderland Writers are going to be reading from Wandering in Paris: Luminaries and Love in the City of light. Join us for delicious bites and delightful tales. The The reading will take place on December 12th from 6-8pm!
About The Book: "At last I have come into a dreamland.." famed Abolinitionist and American Author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, once said about Paris. A group of writers gathered onthe Left Bank in September 2012. They lost themselves in the food, the fashion, the art, the music, the architecture, café society, and the many faces of love. But sometimes it goes dark in the city of light. Our writers also had to contend with Parisian bureaucracy, intercultural tension, French engineering, and what lurks beneath the City's very fashionable surface. The lights go off and on for all of us. Why do we keep coming back to this dazzling metropolis like moths to the flame? Because the roads that lead us to Paris, to personality, to passion lead to our very selves.
As Audrey Hepburn once said, "Paris is always a good idea."
Join us for wine, snacks and more than a taste of Paris when Wanderland Writers editors, Linda Watanabe McFerrin and Joanna Biggar, and contributors to the newest Wanderland Writers anthology toast the City of Light. There will be a reading of the book, copies available onsite and we hope to see you all there!
Readers will include:
Linda Watanabe McFerrin, Joanna Biggar, Antoinette Constable, Cindy Rasicot, Laurie McAndish King, Kitty Hughes, Unity Barry, Mary Brent Cantarutti, Anne Sigmon
