LISA SPENDOV
Born and raised in France on the outskirts of Brittany, Lisa moved to San Francisco at the age of 21 and instantly fell in love with this majestic city. She eventually went back to Europe for a while and lived on the East Coast for almost a decade. After 20 years She made her way back to the Bay Area and moved to Mill Valley in July 2013. Introduced to art through the world of music as a child, Lisa started painting 10 years ago. With guidance and direction from her gifted teacher James Feehan, a local Bucks County artist my passion for art blossomed. By sharing his love for art, James took her on a wonderful journey over the course of 5 years which deepened her need to create. From the very beginning of Lisa's training with James, she was greatly influenced by David Hockney whose choice of subjects and colors fell into total harmony with her own perception of life. "I choose my subjects because they speak to me, either on an aesthetic or emotional level. I then let my inspiration and imagination take full control, what you see on the canvas is the end result of these two aspects of my mind. Painting makes me happy and serene, I feel centered and focused and perfectly connected with the child within." I hope you too enjoy my paintings! ~Lisa Spendov |

Chantal Caramatie "Blockhaus and Graffiti"
Chantal Caramatie PHOTOGRAPHE
It was my father, a photographer himself, originally from the Bordeaux region of France, who most influenced my passion for photography. Eventually, studies at the E S A V (Audio-Visual Graduate School of Toulouse) lead me to realize video shorts.
However, since 2006, I have dedicated myself to photographing the works of contemporary artists who drape with tags and graffiti the remains of “blockhaus.” These are located on the Cap Ferret peninsula in the South West of France between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arcachon Bassin.
There is a strange contrast between these austere blocs of concrete, symbols of a war that still scars the coast, and the colorful works the artists create. On these would be canvases they score their protests, their love, their cries of revolt.
As months go by, I photograph these beaches exposed to storms and unrelenting erosion, and there, on this narrow stretch of sand, I feel the oppressive weight of history dissolve bit by bit in the ocean .
More than a subject, it is a passion inscribed in the dissonance of time that I love to share through my exhibits. I am extremely moved by my visit to San Francisco. It is from your nation that young men were cast upon the French beaches to free my nation from the nazi occupation.
The ephemeral works of art that cover the ”blockhaus” resuscitate from the oblivion of our memory the traces of history.

The Chauvet Impression
In 1994, a cave was discovered by a group of three French speleologists: Éliette Brunel-Deschamps, Christian Hillaire, and Jean-Marie Chauvet. There they found an amazing collection of prehistoric art depicting hundreds of animals, many of them extinct.
What makes it even more amazing is that the radiocarbon dating placed the art, and the person who created it, to somewhere 32,000 thousand years before us.
One has to wonder what the world looked like to the human inhabitants at that time: lacking every modern amenity and familiar protection, and full of threatening dangers, sharp teeth and fangs. Yet we can clearly see the modern intelligence — there is no doubt about the artistic perfection in the power of observation and the accuracy of expression, utilization of unusual and highly advanced techniques of shading and perspective so uncharacteristic of even later art.
Please consider my works as a tribute to the unknown prehistoric artist, some thirty two thousand years later.

August-September 2012:
Denis Krylov's Photography
On view from from August 12 through September 30th at the Alliance Française of San Francisco photography work of Denis Krylov. The show features 14 photographs shot during past two years in and around the city.
Denis' first experiences with photography came during his childhood in Moscow when his dad offered him, a Zenit, best soviet made consumer camera at the time. Moving to Berlin at 19 right after the Wall came down gave Denis plenty of opportunity to hone his skills. Post-cold war Berlin was the perfect photogenic playground with its underground raves, anarchist protests and street art. What a contrast to beautiful San Francisco with its surf and fog where Denis arrived in 2000 to start a digital media studio (www.transparenthouse.com) and motion art gallery (www.472gallery.com).
Denis is captivated by a nonconformist and non-stereotypical. The Golden Gate Bridge barely seen through the fog is exactly how Denis envisions the bridge in contrast to how this American icon is usually represented to the world media. He is fascinated with SF cold summer nights and lonely streets of working-class Sunset. The real heroes of his photographs are the streets, landscape, and other details of urban environment. His goal is to capture a strange and intriguing mood.
Denis resides in San Francisco's Noe Valley with his French-American wife and three children who enjoy travel to France, Russia, and beyond on a regular basis.
This is his first public show.

The New Impressionism of Larissa Noury
Join us May 3rd at 6:00 pm for the gallery opening
May 24th at 6:30 pm Larissa will be giving a special lecture on the
"Symbolic of Colour" at AFSF
Larissa Noury, of Slavic origin, is an atypical artist. She lives and works in Paris, Montmartre since 1998. Whether through her paintings or her photo-engravings on tissue, she seeks to create a harmony of tactile light and immaterial colors. Her style is original and inventive. Her work expresses a world born from her high sensitivity: the color layers are superimposed as strata and give free reign to the imagination. The employed artistic means are both unique and universal; they are a mix of quasi-musical movements, forms, and color harmonies.
Everything seems simple, but this poetic space is nevertheless a very unique and astonishing pictorial universe: no center of gravity, without borders, without any forms that could be clearly defined. But we shouldn’t be mistaken; the impulsive forces of her compositions are just the opposite of simplicity.
Larissa Noury, PhD in Arts (Bordeaux, 2003) and Architecture (Saint Petersburg, 1988), author of two books “Colour in the city” and “Symbolic of colours”, is the most original colorist of Montmartre, her artwork offers the luxury of combining freedom with inner strength. This alliance characterizes all her works, imbued with poetry where love and dreamlike fantasy prevail; reminding us of Monet's impressionism, Chagall's paintings with romantic colors or Kandinsky's compositions by improvised movements. She has done more than 30 solo shows, and group exhibitions in France, the United States, Australia, Spain, Korea, Malaysia, and other places in the world. Her work is in many private collections and in five museums. She created a collection of painted dresses with J.M.Pujol who was working at Yves Saint Laurent’s atelier and presented her film “Dream of Harmony” which is about new technology in art. The combination of images and music makes you plunge into the inside of yourself in a splendid contemplation. « The Music is a painting that can be heard, and the painting is music you can see » Miles Davis

Paintings of Xavier Castellanos
"Mexican Landscape"
The Mexican Landscape paintings of Xavier Castellanos reverberate with a sense of place yet a lack of time, and they suggest a bit of magical realism. They entice us with their views of colour-filled streets, lush gardens, and vibrant views. These paintings evoke great intensity while portraying sleepy colonial hill towns and melodic landscapes.
Reception on Thursday, March 1st

Paintings of Martine Callebaut
" From Windows to wild "
Martine Callebaut graduated from the “ Institut Superieur d’Architecture St Luc “ , in Brussels, Belgium with a degree in interior architecture.
Completing her designs with watercolor renderings and perspectives was always her favorite part. She fell in love with this medium, and have been painting since.
When she goes back home to visit her family and friends, she likes to take a stroll down old villages, immersing herself in the local surroundings. She hears sounds, murmurs, conversations and laughs behind the shutters. Through the openings of the house, good or bad aromas trigger her sense of smell. Here life is confined, structured and carefully controlled.
In opposition to her windows, the animals generate her dream of an escape to the wild. The power of nature invades her soul with peacefulness. Life here dominates in a respectful silence, beauty and innocence, with total freedom.
Meet her during the reception on Wednesday, February 8th.

"Music composition is about structure, thus is relied on architectural purity for this new series. I used notes, keys and other musical elements of diverse scales and combined them with elementary geometrical shapes. I stayed in the black and white world of the traditional musical notations but I introduced subtle values of grays using decorative papers and notations tinted with tea. The artwork has been sprayed with an UV resistant coating to preserve the papers and inks. These pictures are meant to be hung over a piano." Pascale Hery
"With this series of paintings, I wanted to share my personal vision of India.
I used meaningful elements and organized them to create imaginary sceneries.
The models were black and white: abstract patterns, human figures, Buddha’s heads, or animals, representative of the old Indian culture. I reproduced them and put them in color to obtain a specific atmosphere of dream.
I experimented diverse types of media: acrylic, ink, decorative papers, to obtain variations of color and textures that could remind us of vestiges of ancient Indian art." Pascale Hery

Paintings from Corsica
Cultural treasures, natural treasures
by Mara Gahagan
The Alliance Française of San Francisco will be exhibiting paintings and drawings of Corsica by Mara Gahagan, from the first to the thirty-first of July, 2011. The artist traveled to Corsica in September 2010 to direct a painting workshop, and stayed through October, traveling across the island. The dramatic natural beauty and intricate cultural history inspired a series of paintings. Most of the paintings in this collection are watercolor, which captures the luminous quality of Mediterranean light. "The Journal of a Landscape Painter in Corsica” published in 1870, referred to this legendary light; the quality of the timeless and universal found in the work of Mara Gahagan. “Parts of the world like this are like a living fable, or a mystery to me. I wanted to establish that intimate connection between the artist and the journey.” - Mara Gahagan On this journey, the artist became interested in initiatives for ecological and cultural tourism. In recent years, Corsican airports have had sharp increases in traffic, also bringing pollution, cultural erosion and rampant construction. In contemporary depiction of one of the natural and cultural treasures of the world, images such as pristine beaches and cultural antiquities became important subjects that the artist continues to explore. Selected original artwork will be for sale, and several limited editions will be offered. For more information about Mara please visit her website! Le Voyage...
an exhibition of new paintings by Dean HUNSAKER
Un Peu d'Histoire -18''x30"
This exhibition is based on numerous visits to France over the past decade. Par cultural discovery and part homage, the paintings include a mix of traditional still life and landscape genres, such as the iconic café au lait bowls, fleur de lys, red poppies and sun flower.
A regional palette of colors is used, while the surface are heavily layered and distressed to give an aged or timeworn appearance, in a nod to the rich history and art from this region. Some works incorporate pages torn from discarted books in French.

Word on Hand / Le mot et la main
A nostalgie for world of the written word de Dominique CARON
'Library of Characters.' 2010
The abstract paintings of Dominique CARON are on display in the gallery of the Alliance Française de San Francisco April 1st-28th, 2011.
In this series Word on Hand / Le mot et la main, A nostalgie for world of the written word, CARON uses calligraphed and truncated word images in two languages, French and English, reflective of her two overlapping cultures.
An artist who learned to write with pen and ink at the tender age of 5, Dominique says that while discovering the wonder of reading, writing revealed itself to be very challenging. Every word had to be seated gracefully, precisely on a line, politely spaced and never ever marred by “The Spot”, the original sin of spilled ink ... Now many years later the pain of handwriting has gone ... but where is the grace of the hand?
Dominique believes painters often take interest in painting what is disappearing from their world. The interaction of hand, brush, or pen and paper is being replaced by digital text and typing; the idea stays, but not its trace. She combines different mediums including paint, sand, Japanese paper, canvas, gauze and other tools such as hand made brushes, sticks, and spatulas to "leave the marks that will talk to our eyes."
A student of the École des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux, Dominique CARON maintains a studio in San Francisco as well as in France. Please join us for a soirée rendez-vous with Dominique.
Bring friends and enjoy a glass of wine or two, art, and French conversation. Donations appreciated.

Paysages et Villages
de Richard BENNETT
The Alliance Française de San Francisco is pleased to present Paysages et Villages an exposition by Richard Bennett who is inspired by the "history and courage of the French people, [...] the Art and culture, French cooking, the wines, the beauty of the countryside and the humor and kindness
of the people" that "are a big part of the [French] experience."
For Richard, "the villages hanging precariously on the slopes of the mountains of the Alpes Maritimes in Southeastern France, the steep gorges and swift rivers carrying their cargo of stones down to the Mediterranean are some of the most inspiring features of a rich and varied landscape."
A native of and teacher in Santa Cruz, Richard participates in local Art organizations and believes Art is "the key to the understanding and the preservation of the tree of life."
The paintings comprising Paysages et Villages are based on travels in Nice and the valleys of the Var and Tinée rivers.
Please join for a soirée rendez-vous with Richard, an evening of art and conversation. Bring friends and enjoy a glass of wine or two ! Donations appreciated. Jeudi 10 mars à 18h30 |Thu., March 10th, 6:30pm

Reflections: on Crossing
de Anne SUBERCASEAUX
The Alliance Française de San Francisco welcomes local artist Anne SUBERCASEAUX and her beautiful exposition Reflections: on Crossing.
From a Bay Bridge commute, Anne Subercaseaux was inspired to paint the works of Reflections: on Crossing. She has always been fascinated with feats of engineering and interested by the juxtaposition of man-made constructions with natural ladscape elements. While driving across the bridge, Anne observes the lights and shadows cast from beams and cables onto the pavement surface. The patterns of road lines and the colors and textures of pavement provide Anne abstract imagery to paint.
The artist comments that "each painting is a unique experience and challenge. I work in oil, layering and moving paint with varied brushwork ... I explore space, light, quiet, motion and temperature - elements integral
to my artistic experience. Our world is inundated with imagery and distractions; in my work, I like to create a sense of mystery and calm."
Please join for a soirée rendez-vous with Anne, an evening of art and conversation. Bring friends and enjoy a glass of wine or two ! Donations appreciated.
