Pierre Brochant and his friends have a competition: every Wednesday, each one of them invites the dumbest man he can find for a dinner. Later, after the guests say goodbye, the group of friends elects the most stupid and imbecile guest. Pierre invites François Pignon, a man that works in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and makes "maquettes". But, unfortunately, Pierre gets a severe pain in his back and stays at home, stuck with that clumsy François Pignon who always creates disasters.

François Pignon, an unassuming divorced man with a teenaged son who ignores him, lives a quiet and unremarkable life. When he learns he will be fired from his job, his new neighbor Jean-Pierre Belone proposes that Pignon start a rumor he is homosexual. The factory's primary product is condoms, so the gay community's support is essential, and Kopel will have to keep Pignon on the payroll to avoid charges of anti-homosexual bigotry.
